The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation about The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
