They're Doing in America What They Performed within Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and defining occasions – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of multiple weeks, the American president started showing everyone his designs for a lavish reception room two times larger than the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing portion to build it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID amounts to 600,000 and growing, and recently research projected his petroleum strategies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – really, no previous leader would have conceived – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of multiple the richest Americans, almost all of whom have business with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the world' toward 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'

As confusing as it is to observe the leader seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, because theoretically Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and because the fastest-growing cadre within America may possess limited understanding of him since they are non-believers or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.

It is unquestionably definitely not the story of a powerful ruler emerging; rather, an infant arrives to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message focuses on affection for fellow humans, particularly for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Jesus' answer to hostility is to present the other cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a way to teach the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if someone steals your coat you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.

The apparent and clear reality that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a type of extreme compassion focused on the needy is what has always made Christian religion rather a controversial faith: engaging for the general public, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was restrained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Highest of Us

So I have been heartened to witness the determined opposition regarding Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been great solace to assist in constructing the initiative that has protested openly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to turn out in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners at every demonstration and calls to the highest qualities of American history.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or reject?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by relationship to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by reference to elements that cause it to be special and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it imply acting as if the most negative regarding America and religious tradition never occurred; it signifies both humility and belief, a combination that genuine national faithful ought to accept.
