Trump's System of Retribution and Reward

Donald Trump's voracious desire for retribution has quickly transformed into a organized system. Within the year since his election, the president's fury and whims have assumed the guise of government actions in ways comparable to past authoritarian governments. Government officials who resist his demands are promptly dismissed and replaced by supporters. Political leaders who question him encounter prosecution, judicial process and sanctions. Opponents have been labeled under executive memoranda as “anti-American”, “opposed to religious values” and “anti-capitalist”, and warned with legal action as “security threats”.

The Justice System Transformed

Each instance involving prosecution of Trump's enemies and leniency for loyalists exhibits its own distinct features. Yet, regardless of their specific nature, they embody expressions of what has emerged as a systematic approach. Those events are not isolated. His removal of Department of Justice prosecutors and FBI officials, coupled with his appointment of devotees in key positions, started quickly, promptly developed a consistency, and has now been formed into a system. The justice department and the FBI have been restructured into partisan organizations under Trump's explicit command to implement his wishes. Wrongdoing has been turned into normal. It represents the apparatus of revenge.

Leadership is preoccupied with targeting the leader's alleged enemies than they are with safeguarding our country's safety.

Internal the Structure

The beginnings of this mechanism has been exposed in the court filing of several ex- senior Federal Bureau executives filed in September in the federal court in Washington against agency head Kash Patel and attorney general another official for wrongful dismissal in “a campaign of retribution against the officials for what the accused judged to be a failure to exhibit adequate allegiance”. According to the filing that one official, the previous temporary head, details a discussion in which Patel “openly acknowledged the impropriety of his conduct”.

Driscoll had tried to shield FBI agents from being fired, the filing claims. The director advised him that “they” – interpreted by Driscoll to be the White House and justice department – had ordered him to remove everyone who they determined as having been involved in a criminal investigation against Trump. The filing continues: “Patel clarified that he had to dismiss the people his bosses told him to remove, because his capacity to keep his own position was contingent on the removal of the agents who were involved in investigations involving the leader. He noted that there was no way he or the official could do to prevent these or any other dismissals, because ‘the FBI tried to place the chief in jail and he hasn't forgotten it.’” When he advised him he was violating the agency's own internal rules, Patel supposedly said “he knew that and he was aware the nature of the immediate dismissals were likely illegal”.

Widespread Consequences

Following Patel's claimed admission to Driscoll, the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau have been gutted and reorganized for the administration's retribution system. Six of the bureau's senior executives were terminated or pushed out in the initial period of the presidency. Approximately thousands of legal professionals at the department have accepted a “early exit scheme”. At least seven DoJ lawyers, including those in the southern district of New York, resigned in objection over what they considered as partisan influence in withdrawing the legal action against the city leader, the mayor, in return for his assistance with Trump's federal agency detentions of migrants. The ethics division of the department, which manages corruption cases, has been diminished to two attorneys. The rights protection unit has been severely reduced: seventy percent of its staff has departed. A third of top officials at the justice department have left. The section enforcing environmental law has seen departures of a majority its management.

Incentives and Penalties

Regarding the legal matter, the acting US attorney for the federal division, the official, stepped down in dissent against what she labeled as the “trade-off”. A key figure, Trump's “border czar,” showed up as the enforcer with him on television to announce: “Should he fail to deliver, I will return in the city.”. And, Emil Bove, earlier the senior DoJ official and a past legal representative, who arranged the agreement, was given an appellate federal judgeship, a potential stepping stone to the judicial branch.

His immunity for wrongdoings perpetrated while in power, awarded by the extraordinary judgment of the Republican majority on the highest court, thus preventing his legal action over the Capitol riot and maintaining his electoral prospects for the presidential race, is the basis on which he depends to protect his loyalists. With such immunity, he has been freed to permit corruption. The effect of the judicial ruling infuses his presidency and the GOP thoroughly. The legal case has escalated. In the words of Richard Nixon's legal adviser John Dean remarked about the Watergate
